Sussex Landscapes: The rock pattern

The Sussex Landscape is dictated by the rock formations that underlie it; sands and clays, chalks and limestones, all contribute to the distinctive and diverse surface patterns of the county.

The human landscape of Sussex is a mix of soils and society; this gives us a National Park and Gatwick airport, as well as Brighton’s bohemian North Laine and aristocratic Firle Place

Sussex by the Sea’ implies piers proms and holiday crowds, but Sussex by the sea is also Beachy Head, Chichester Harbour, Camber sands, and Selsey Bill.

Sussex Landscapes: The Weald and the National Park

The Weald & the South Downs National Park display features of landscape difference, as varied as the rural-industrial landscapes of the High Weald and the rich agricultural aspects of the Downland and scarpfoot.

About the Speaker
​
​Dr Geoffrey Mead
Geoff was born and raised in Brighton and took his BA, MA, and PhD as a Geographer at the University of Sussex, where he worked in the Adult Education department with the Landscape Studies degree team and as Convenor for Local History. His PhD thesis was on the suburban growth of interwar Brighton, centred on the area of Patcham.
